Animals and Inflammatory Bowel Disease

 IBD
Inflammatory bowel disease is actually a chronic condition in gastrointestinal track. In IBD, as we disgusted earlier in class, CD can effect different areas of the digestive track, and involves the whole intestinal wall, while UC is an ulcerative and inflammatory disease and it’s usually limited to superficial layers of the colon, such as mucosa and superficial part of the sub mucosa.
Animals like dogs and cats might also develop IBD some way similar to human. IBD have the same incidence in males and females, and middle-aged dogs seem to be more affected. Different breeds of dogs will actually develop different type of IBD.
Information in dogs with IBD
In dogs, the development of IBD is a result of a deregulation of mucosal immunity in predisposed animals. On the other hand the loss of tolerance to antigens is one of the most studied mechanisms that could justify the development of chronic intestinal inflammation. Interruption of the mucosal barrier, independently of the primary cause (bacterial, chemical, etc.), can also lead to further antigen exposure, allowing the process to become chronic, and is enforced by decreased apoptosis of lymphocytes, as demonstrated in dogs with IBD.
Also based on this research, IBD in dogs, similar to humans, shows some relationship with genetic factors and even enteric bacteria can play a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of these disorders.
 Differences between species with IBD
An important development in human medicine has shown the different involvement of lymphocyte subtypes (Th1 and Th2) in IBD, with Th1 being mainly implicated in CD while Th2 predominate in UC, with subsequent different cytokine activation.
Here for dogs, things are different, even though it has recently been hypothesized that different Th cells can be involved in different IBD types, we can see that there is mixed activation of Th1 and Th2 in IBD, which will cause different expression of some cytokines.
How do I know if my dog has IBD?
The signs, symptoms, and history of dogs and cats with IBD are similar to many, many diseases: intermittent, chronic vomiting, diarrhea and weight loss in dogs. There are also some other symptoms such as, flatulence, anorexia, ravenous appetite, bloody or mucosal stools and abdominal pain. So that’s why we need to do some examinations, such as Blood tests, urinalysis, specialized blood tests, and radiographs to determine if the symptoms are those of IBD or some other GI condition. Intestinal biopsy is the ONLY way to conclusively determine if the condition in question is IBD. Hypoallergenic diets may be tried to see the response to treatment.
How Does a Dog Develop IBD?
The causes of IBD in animals aren’t well understood. But similar to human it seems that genetics, diet, intestinal infection and abnormalities of a dog's immune system all play a role. The intestine is responsible for processing large amounts of food and bacterial particles called antigens.
Antigens recognized by a dog's body, which are called "foreign" can cause an abnormal allergic (immune-type) response, so the lining of the intestine is invaded with inflammatory cells and this inflammation will cause the lost of ability to digest and absorb nutrients.
Common antigens in the intestine include proteins and preservatives from the food, parasites, viruses or bacteria, and ingested foreign material, of these antigens can start an abnormal immune response but even when the antigen is no longer present, the inflammation continues. In most instances, an exact underlying cause cannot be identified, so that’s why we call this idiopathic IBD.
What is the long-term prognosis for dogs with IBD?
IBD can’t be cured, but there are some ways that we can control it. In all patients with IBD we can use anti-inflammatory medication and also a strict to be able to manage this disease. Most dogs with IBD do well for many years while others require alterations in therapy every few months to treat flare-ups and recurrent symptoms. Unfortunately, a few dogs will fail to respond to treatment. If the symptoms are severe enough, IBD can progress to intestinal cancer, so dogs have to be examined several times a year to keep the disease under control.

  1. this is really interesting, i never though that dogs can get IBD and i think this could be beneficial to compare and contrast between human and dog's IBD and get a better understanding of the disease, because the dog's system is a bit different and may react a bit different to the disease

  2. Yes, this is interesting and yes dogs can also get IBD and i found this article online which talks about these cats having IBD and they have similar signs, symptoms, and reasoning. And they used these cats in the study of IBD in human beings.

  3. Although therapy has become more tolerable and once daily FDC tables have made it easier to adhere to prescribed treatment, it still requires that patients take their medication regularly to achieve sustained viral suppression. When treatment adherence is inadequate and replication is therefore not suppressed, But dr itua promised and fulfilled his promised to me as he said I will share his work to people that are suffering from Infertility, Herpes,Cervical Cancer,Bone Cancer,Brain Cancer,Prostate Cancer,Leukemia,Brain Tumor,Breast Cancer,Blood Cancer,Kidney Cancer,, Hepatitis A/B, Fibroid, HIV/ Aids, Alzheimer's disease, Arthritis, Copd, Diabetes, Liver/Kidney Inflamotry,Glaucoma., Cataracts,Macular degeneration,Cardiovascular disease,Lung disease.Enlarged prostate,Osteoporosis.Alzheimer's disease,
